Full Day Applique Workshops

"Welcome" Easy Applique Sampler - New!  
Mimi designed this Easy Applique Sampler with the traditional pineapple symbol of hospitality. In class we will use a stitch-marked method of hand applique to position the four pineapples perfectly, then freezer-paper techniques for the vine around the border of the sampler. This is a great project for 'sampling' a variety of applique techniques!

Gather your favorite fabrics together and make this scrappy quilt from the cover of Mimi's book Bed and Breakfast Quilts. In the first half of the class we will machine piece blocks for the center of the quilt. In the second part of the class, we will learn to applique the vine, leaves and hearts around the border. The quilt is made with Thimbleberries fabrics, but it looks great made with any collection of fabrics.

This little quilt from The Easy Art of Applique was designed with four appliqued blocks in the style of the Baltimore Album quilts. During this all-day workshop we will stitch one of the designs, using techniques that can be applied to the other blocks. We will use the open wreath pattern in class, stitching thin stems, leaves, folded buds, flowers, circles, and the heart in the center.

Miniature Violets  
Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can "grow" beautiful violets. During this all-day workshop, make one block from "Miniature Violets" from The Easy Art of Applique. Using dimensional applique techniques, stitch a little pot of violets with "pinched leaves" and "gathered blossoms". This a class for all skill levels.

Pieces of the Past  
Does your fabric "stash" include fabrics that you love- but you are not sure exactly what to do with them? This little quilt (25" x 32") was inspired by the Smithsonian reproduction fabric collections. The scrappy design of the quilt uses all of the fabrics from one of the collections. The pieced blocks are rotary cut and quickly sewn together with alternating plain squares. Two of the blocks are embellished with appliqued hearts.

Baltimore Basics Classes - New!  
Mimi teaches a year-long class in her hometown of Baltimore where students applique blocks to make Baltimore Album Quilts. If you want to learn some of the techniques without a big project, or if you just want to brush up on applique techniques, here’s your chance! Mimi teaches 3-hour applique technique classes based on her book Easy Applique Samplers. The class projects will be small 'samples' but you can use the techniques to applique any of the projects in her book- or to start a Baltimore Album!
  • Class 1: Three techniques for appliqued stems
  • Class 2: Three techniques for appliqued leaves (outside points)
  • Class 3: Hearts (curves and inside points) and perfect circles
  • Class 4: Dimensional folded buds and gathered blossoms
  • Class 5: Fusible applique with soft centers (buttonhole stitch)
  • Class 6: Letters (fused, embroidered, and appliqued)

Learn fun techniques for dimensional flowers during this half-day workshop. Students will construct a small gathered blossom and a large gathered flower using ruching techniques. The flowers will be made as samples of techniques that can later be used to create dimensional flowers in applique designs, or to substitute for flowers in existing patterns.

Learn the basics of binding a quilt in this half-day workshop. These are techniques you can use on every quilt you make! Learn how to apply binding to straight edges, curves, mitered corners, and how to connect the ends of the binding. Straight grain and bias binding will be discussed.
